Originally from Nova Scotia, Sara Coffin is a Vancouver based dance artist. She completed her BFA in dance at Simon Fraser University's School for the Contemporary Arts, and her Kinesiology degree (BSc K) from Dalhousie. Multiple Award winner, Sara was the recipient of the the Santa Aloi Award (2010), Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award (2009), and the BC Emerging Dance Artist Award (2005).
Notable artist she has worked with include; Daelik of MACHiNENOiSY, Jennifer Clarke, Claire French, Mascall Dance, Susan Elliott, The Holy Body Tattoo, and the TILT sound + motion dance company. In 2010, Sara was the catalyst for the creation and presentation of the Canadian premiere of Schreibstuck by German choreographer Thomas Lehmen.
Sara is a co-founder for SiNS (sometimes in Nova Scotia) Dance, a collective that traverses Canada. As an artist, her endeavors in research, creation and production have been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council for both study abroad and in support of her choreographic practice. Including attending ADF (2002), Impulstanz (2005), Movement Research (NYC), and to research dance and on-line performance platforms, among others.
Coffin's work has been presented throughout Nova Scotia, in Toronto, Victoria and Vancouver; including Dancing on The Edge, Dance in Vancouver, ROMP!, Dances for a Small Stage and Toronto's 808 series. As a choreographer Sara is interested in the vulnerability of the human body and our connection and function to technology as a society. Her recent full-length work taking your experience for mine was described by the press as "hauntingly gorgeous, witty, and where the virtual goes visceral."
Sara has sat on the board of directors for the Dance Centre's Artistic Advisory Committee, CADA/BC and has acted as assistant programmer and teaching faculty for the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby, BC since 2006.
